Co-Housing Israel (CHI) has been awarded the 10,000$ first place Glickman Prize for its work on developing affordable housing solutions for healthy aging in Israel.
CHI’s work was honored at the 2021 Aging Ecosystem Drivers Conference, organized by Aging IL and jointly sponsored by Joint/Eshel, Kaveret, Kranot haBituah Leumi, and Ashoka. The conference was attended by close to 300 policy makers, academics, entrepreneurs, technology experts, programmers and social activists engaged in developing innovation technology to improve the quality of life for seniors in Israel.
Judy Labensohn, CHI Board Chairperson, expressed appreciation to the judges, Aging IL and the Glickman family: “We are thrilled that the hard work by seniors to develop housing solutions for seniors is being recognized and supported.”
The mission of Co-Housing Israel is to create affordable, intentional senior-only or multi-generational shared housing communities that support the healthy aging of people 50+.
Inspired by Israeli innovations in community-building, by new models of urban co-living, and by the growing co-housing movement in Europe and North America, CHI/(אד"מ) is a registered cooperative and managed by its members. CHI is working to establish co-housing communities around the country.
The prestigious Glickman Prize for innovation was established by Joseph "Chickie" Glickman and is managed today by his daughter Elaine Galinson. It recognizes initiatives that strive to empower Israeli seniors and improve their quality of life.
What could be a better description of what CHI is all about? The funds will help defray development costs as the membership continues to grow and CHI works to change the landscape of affordable senior housing options in Israel today.

Community is about open communication. The consensus decision-making process ensures the involvement of all members in decisions that affect their lives. When everyone is involved in the decision-making process, people get to know each other well and this fosters community. One of the key elements of consensus is learning to listen to others. Disagreement does not mean the end of discussion, but the beginning of a more meaningful and deeper discussion.
A Members’ Agreement is a binding agreement drawn up by the people who plan to live in a particular cohousing project. Each cohousing site has its own Members’ Agreement. Subjects, such as waiting lists, meals, meetings, behavior in common spaces, rituals and pets are defined by the members for themselves. Experience shows that it is wise to begin forming a Members’ Agreement months before moving in. The process itself builds community.
